Why the idea sounds so reasonable
Etsy is a marketplace. More listings can mean more chances to be found, more keywords, more entry points, and more opportunities for a buyer to land in your shop. That is not wrong.
The problem starts when “more listings” becomes the entire strategy. Then you are not building a system. You are feeding the hamster wheel with fresh product photos.
More of what, exactly?
More strong listings can absolutely help. More average, unclear, or interchangeable listings often do not. If your current listings are barely clicked, barely favorited, and barely bought, the most important question is not how many more you need.
The better question is: what is not working in the listings you already have?
Small aha moment: Quantity helps when the foundation is strong. When the foundation is fuzzy, quantity mostly gives the fuzziness more square footage.
Visible effort vs. real growth levers
Uploading a new listing feels wonderfully concrete. There is a product. A title. A button. A little burst of progress. Much nicer than asking whether your offer is clear enough or whether the market actually wants this exact thing.
But growth usually comes from the uncomfortable combination: the right product, the right buyer, the right positioning, enough trust, and a listing that helps someone decide.
When more listings make sense
- You already know which product direction has demand.
- Your listings are getting clicks and some sales, and you can build around a proven pattern.
- You are creating meaningful variations, not just twenty-seven almost identical versions.
- You understand what the buyer is looking for and why your product fits.
When more listings may be a distraction
If you are uploading because you feel anxious, because everyone says you need hundreds of products, or because making another listing feels safer than diagnosing the shop, pause. Kindly. No drama. Just pause.
In chapter 2 of the book, I show how to tell whether you really have a reach problem or whether you are producing more of something that is not carrying the shop yet.
